I don’t mean to panic you but we’re nearly at the end of 2019 and about to enter what I call “Social Season”. Those motivational quotes about only having 3 months left of the year only seem to have one effect – a diary full of catch up dinners and drinks before the party season truly kicks off. If you’re anything like me, the excitement about seeing lovely people and eating delicious food from now to infinity quickly gives way to panic about what to wear. So I figured out it was time to revisit a tried-and-tested outfit fave – jeans and a nice top.
Like Patsy and Eddie or Cher and Dionne, jeans and a nice top are an unbeatable combination. Versatile, easy and dependable just like your real-life BFF, jeans and a nice top are magically appropriate for every occasion Social Season could throw at you.
Meeting your new boyfriend’s pals? Sorted. A night out with the girls? Surely this is just your unofficial crew uniform. Dinner with coworkers? Sorted. Kris Jenner works hard but jeans and a top work harder.
Me: What are you going to wear babe?
Her: IDK just jeans and a nice top.

As much as I love to experiment with style and adopt new trends, I’m a fully paid-up member of the jeans and a top gang. I love wearing a classic black top with jeans as I did in this post when I rebranded my blog to reena-rai.com. Jeans look equally good with a sassy little wrap top, which I wore in this post about supporting your local girl gang and I recently styled some jeans with a bodysuit in this post about self-care. I love a bodysuit with jeans for giving you a super sleek silhouette.
In this post, I’ve gone for a ‘business in the front, party in the back’ vibe with this gorgeous lavender silk top from one of my favourite independent designers, Mebuar. Jenn, who is the founder, handmakes each piece by hand and is an absolute sweetheart. I’ve bought three tops from her brand and cherish them all. It’s super important to support independent designers. I paired the top with a vintage blazer and I’ve previously written some tips to on how to shop for vintage clothing.
I’ve put together some edits of my favourite jeans and tops to wear with them. Bookmark this post and save it for later – you’ll need this handy edit to see you through Social Season!
