Last night saw the stars gather for the annual Academy Awards, a celebration of the finest films as well as one of the most important red carpet moments. I stayed up to see the red carpet arrivals as they happened, with a running commentary on Twitter. There were some really great looks and an overwhelming trend for white and neutral shades. Here are my best dressed from the Oscars red carpet:
Janelle Monae in Elie Saab Couture
I was first introduced to Janelle Monae 5 years ago by my old manager, he loved her music and I fell in love with her style. This girl has always known how to dress but hasn’t really had a breakthrough moment on the red carpet, until now. This Elie Saab couture gown is so extra and I love it. From the voluminous shape to the ornate beading, it’s an exquisite piece of art. perfectly complemented with a gorgeous pixie crop, this is the red carpet look I’ve been waiting for from Ms Monae.
Emma Stone in Givenchy
All eyes were on Best Actress nominee Miss Stone. Emma is a pro at red carpet dressing and doesn’t usually set a foot wrong, the Oscars were no exception. Opting for a very special piece from Riccardo Tisci’s final collection for Givenchy, Emma channeled old Hollywood glamour in a five-tiered 1920s style gown which was accessories with a chic red lip and soft waves. I love this look even more than her dress and trousers combination at the BAFTAs.
Taraji P Henson in Alberta Ferretti
After a disappointing look at the Grammys, I’m so pleased to see Taraji back on form. She has never looked better. This midnight blue velvet Alberta Ferretti dress clings to her curves while the curved off the shoulder neckline shows off her décolletage and those twinkling jewels. A simple look which made a big impact, this was one of my favourite looks of the night.
Brie Larson in Oscar de la Renta
This is an exquisite look from Brie, in Oscar for the Oscars. I loved the dramatic sweetheart neckline which balanced out the flamenco-style lower half, the ruffles bought drama and movement to this elegant look. I just wish that the hair was different, it looks rushed and very nearly ruins an otherwise impeccable look. Her hair at the Golden Globes would have been much more appropriate.
Kirsten Dunst in Dior
No one is more surprised that I like a Kirsten Dunst look than I am. This classic Dior look is just so simple and elegant. The slightly dipped hem, simple neckline and shape all work well on Kirsten and honestly, I can’t get enough of dresses with pockets, it is literally my favourite thing. Again, I feel like the hair slightly let this look down, it just needed to look a little more ‘done’ for this look.
