One of the undoubtable highlights of Nicolas Ghesquiere’s inaugural AW14 collection for Louis Vuitton was the brand new Petite Malle, or little trunk, handbag. Sensitively balancing the Louis Vuitton’s luggage heritage while creating something new, the devil is in the detail. A shrunken version of Vuitton’s iconic travel trunk, each interation of the Petite Malle featured the three cross signature of photographer Albert Kahn – Ghesquiere was inspired by zinc-covered leather trunks created for Kahn between 1911 and 1929. The clasp of the trunk clutch features a revived logo, inspired by a photo of one of the first Vuitton boutiques in the 1800s, with slanted initials in a round shape. Each trunk is handmade and a masterpiece in its own right. This video follows each step in the process of making a Petite Malle, a rare glimpse into the making of an iconic bag:
