When Anna Piaggi passed away in August this year aged 81, the fashion world mourned a true eccentric icon. Describing fashion as ” a moment, an expression. My philosophy of fashion is humour, jokes and games. I make my own rules. I never pick up something and just throw it on my back like that. There’s a little bit of study, and it’s always better if I think about what I’m going to wear the night before the next day. And what is to be avoided at all costs is the twinset look, the total look”; Anna had a fearless approach to fashion which has become her signature. Her exuberant and unique style has earnt Anna a legion of fans and admirers including Karl Lagerfeld and Steven Jones.
This month, W magazine celebrates its 40th anniversary with a tribute to fashion originals, including Anna Piaggi. Just one month before she passed away, Tim Walker was dispatched to Milan to photograph Anna in what would be her last photoshoot and a very poignant tribute to her inimitable style.
