Honestly, I’m still a little sad that Paul Costelloe isn’t opening London Fashion Week anymore. It’s not that I’m a massive fan of his label, it’s more that it became a routine to kick off the London fashion circus. This season, Antoni & Alison kicked off proceedings with a carnival of colour to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Interestingly, rather than looking back and doing a retrospective collection, the design duo decided to look forward and made ‘New Work’. The spring/summer 2013 collection features a riot of colour and bold patterns, each pattern was drawn and painted by hand using paint brush marks, mixed acrylics, ink drawings, spray can gestures, charcoal smudges, HB pencil lines, gold leaf and felt tip among other mediums. In terms of silhouette, big, long and voluminous shapes in square, triangular or rectangular shapes dominated for an easy-to-wear, confident look. And yes, that is a brass band you can see in the pictures – it was pretty spectacular!
