On the surface, Givenchy Couture Fall 2010 is a pared down affair – presentation rather than a show and the collection was more than halved to just ten looks. I think that this works well for couture, I think the clothes are so beautiful that they don’t really need an elaborate show to create interest or a buzz. It also allows full attention to the clothes, they can take centre stage. And the clothes themselves really do deserve all the attention, with the Swarovski crystal catsuit taking 1,600 hours to make and a gold lace dress taking an epic six months, the collection is beautifully elaborate.
The collection was inspired by Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and her three obsessions: religion, sensuality and the human anatomy. The collection, though light in colour, definitely had Tisci’s trademark gothic tones in abundance – skulls and bones were scattered liberally throughout the collection. I think it’s an utterly stunning collection and Tisci has outdone himself. Every piece is exquisite, an absolute work of art.
