A while back, I was invited to take a sneak peek at Kangol and Siwy Denim collections for Autumn Winter 2010 by their lovely PR agency.
Being an 80s baby, I remember Kangol from my youth. Everyone wore those backwards caps, well the cool kids anyway. Of course, I had one in classic black with a white emblem. What I didn’t know then was the interesting history behind the iconic British label.
Kangol was launched in 1938 and they were a major supplier of berets during World War II. Popularity grew, with designers such as Mary Quant and Pierre Cardin working with the brand/ They became popular in the swinging sixties, even having an exclusive deal with The Beatles who were of course icons of this era.
The brand entered my stream of consciousness during the 80s, thanks to hiphop artists such as LL Cool J and Grand Master Flash, as well as the timelessly stylish Princess Diana. Today, Kangol stands as a British heritage brand, with a rich archive.
The new collection features many of their classic shapes including caps and trilbys in gorgeous fabrics and lovely prints.
New York based label Siwy is relatively new, launching just 5 years ago by founder Michelle Siwy. The premium denim label prides itself on it’s quality stretch denim and the finish and detail of their jeans. Described as ‘tough, feminine and authentic’, the brand counts Kate Moss, Selma Blair and Nicole Richie among it’s fans.
Many years ago, I went through a phase of pretty much living in jeans. I amassed an enormous collection and because uber fussy about almost every aspect you might think of when purchasing a pair of jeans including fit, waistband (no gapes please!), pockets (can make or break how good your backside look) and how they look with heels and flats. I know Siwy to have a flattering fit as well as being comfortable. The quilted back pockets were very flattering and the curved hem and the bottom of the jeans avoids that horrible ripped look when you switch to flats.
The new collection is gorgeous and has lots of little details from zips to embellishment which I adore. There is also an absolutely amazing pair of leather trousers which I drooled over.
